Formentera is the smallest and southernmost of the Balearic Islands , located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Ibiza. With a mere 83 km² and stretching some 20 km from end to end, it packs pristine beaches, turquoise coves, and a rural landscape seemingly frozen in time into a very small area. How to get there Since Formentera has no airport, it can only be reached by boat . Ferries depart from the port of Ibiza and cross to the port of La Savina in about 30 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the year. Many travelers fly first to Ibiza Airport and then connect with the ferry. Geography The island stretches between two large headlands: the La Mola plateau to the east, crowned by its lighthouse, and Cap de Barbaria to the south, arid and battered by the wind. Between them, a narrow isthmus connects the island to the Es Trucadors peninsula, home to the famous beaches of Ses Illetes and Llevant . Getting around the island Distances are short: you can explore the entire island in a short time by bicycle, on foot along the network of greenways , by bus, or by car. During peak season, vehicle access is regulated to protect the environment.
