Fossar Vell de Sant Francesc

The Fossar Vell de Sant Francesc Xavier was Formentera's historic cemetery. It already existed in 1757 and remained in use until 1940. Within an almost square enclosure surrounded by a masonry wall, it preserves five funerary chapels dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century, an ossuary and other outbuildings. Its restoration, the work of Formentera-born architect Marià Castelló and a finalist for the 2017 FAD Awards, reinforced the structure with the few original materials available and left the patina of time visible, with the local marès stone taking centre stage. It sits right in the heart of the village, next to the church; a haven of silence that is perfect for a short visit, ideally bathed in the soft light of sunrise or sunset.
