Sant Francesc - La Mola

Sant Francesc → Es Caló

9 km · 135 min a pie · 45 min en bici · Fácil

Route 15 is one of the longest green circuits on the island, connecting Sant Francesc Xavier with La Mola . To start it, we will take the old path that led to La Mola , which runs parallel to the main road and is asphalted in its first section. This walk offers a typically rural landscape: stone walls, livestock, and propped fig trees, some of them very large. The function of this ancestral technique is multiple: to provide shade for livestock, prevent branches from re-rooting, facilitate the collection of figs, prevent sheep and goats from reaching them, and give resistance to the fig tree's canopy against the strong winds common on the island. The largest fig tree is that of Can Mestre , called the “ Blanca d’en Mestre ”, which creates a huge space under its canopy supported by a spiral system of wood and iron fittings. This internal structure has been analyzed by the Formentera architect Marià Castelló as if it were a model of organic-artificial construction. Before reaching Es Caló , we can visit the Roman castellum of Can Blai , remains of a fortified construction from the Roman era. Continuing along the main road, we will arrive at the fishing village of Es Caló de Sant Agustí where we can savor its maritime environment. It is highly recommended to visit its natural harbor and the traditional food restaurants in the area. Leaving Es Caló behind, route 15 ends at the beginning of the Sa Pujada path which leads us to El Pilar de La Mola .
