Sant Ferran → Es Ca Marí

Through this route, only ten minutes by bicycle or half an hour walking at a brisk pace, separate the inland village of Sant Ferran de ses Roques from Es Ca Marí beach. This route, an alternative to the road and much more direct, runs along interior paths representative of the most rural Formentera. Along this journey, we can observe one of the unique elements of the Formentera countryside, the network of dry stone walls. It fulfills several functions simultaneously: separating areas intended for different uses, limiting properties, protecting vegetation from the wind, and helping to store the stone removed from fields to make them arable. Furthermore, it makes it difficult for animals to jump from one side to the other. In short, it is a testament to how man has shaped and ordered the landscape over the years, taking advantage of one of the most abundant resources offered by the Formentera environment: stone. Following our path and before reaching Migjorn beach, we will find one of the defensive towers distributed along the coast: the tower of Es Pi d’es Català . Like the other five, it served to raise the alarm in case of a pirate incursion from the sea and is located at a strategic point, visually communicated with that of Es Cap .
